January 6, 2024 Los Angeles, California Day 18
We woke up this morning docked outside of Los Angeles. This is our view. Later in the day this picture would be filled with sail boats. It is a beautiful morning, but cool. During breakfast it was 46 degrees, but during our excursion it was warm enough for Mike to walk around in short sleaves.
We were in Santa Monica on our own. We shopped around, didn't find what I was looking for, walked to the Pier, got some pictures, and found a Target to pick up some snacks. Our guide shared many interesting facts about the area. The pier first opened on September 1909. There is a Carousel here which was featured in The Sting. If you saw the movie, I am sure you remember the scene
We found the start of Route 66. Mike and I have taken other pictures, so this will be added to our collection.
Do you think we will find anyone to give us a ride? I don't think we know which way we are going.Tonight's sunset
Tonight we had a Welcome for the new world travelers. We did have a little notice that we would be seeing Torstein Hagen, the CEO of Viking Cruise Line. His picture was on facebook as other cruisers took their picture with him as they met him on the ship when they arrived. He is a very soft spoken, humble man. He was gracious and took many pictures with his guests. We thought he was going to be traveling with us, but instead, he is enjoying the weather in LA, and will wait with his daughter to greet the Neptune that is traveling 3 days behind us.
We met Margaret, Gina Lira's sister. Mike met her 48 years ago at his best friend's (Steve Lira) wedding. Margaret had planned this trip and ended up on the same ship. We had a fun dinner together letting her know what we could about our experience on the ship. Margaret is on the right.
It has been a fun day. I have over 12,000 steps and sore feet. We will wake up in Santa Barbara tomorrow morning for another great day.
